Israel has launched a vigorous diplomatic offensive to convince the US and major European powers, such as France, Germany and Britain, not to renew 2015’s Iran nuclear agreement.
The international community should use military force if Iran creates nuclear weapons, the Israeli Prime Minister Yair Lepid said to the United Nations Thursday. He also reiterated his support for a Palestinian state.
In recent months, Israel has engaged in a vigorous diplomatic offensive to try and persuade America and the main European powers like Britain, France, and Germany to not renew the 2015 Iran nuclear agreement.
Over the past 10 days, several officials suggested that the deal, which was scrapped by Donald Trump in 2018, might not be renewed before at least mid November. This deadline Lapid tried to use to force the West to adopt a more aggressive approach to their negotiations.
Lapid stated that Iran cannot acquire a nuclear weapon if it is not presented with credible military threats.
Only then can a “longer, stronger deal with them” possible.
He stated that Iran must be told clearly that if it advances its nuclear program, the world will not react with words but with military force.
He made it clear that Israel would engage if threatened.
He said, “We will do what it takes.” “Iran won’t get a nuclear weapon.”
A senior US official dismissed any differences between Lapid, President Joe Biden and Lapid. Biden has pledged not to allow Iran to develop an atomic weapon.
Diplomacy is “by and large the best way” of achieving that goal. But, “as a last resort,” he would resort if necessary to military force, the official stated under anonymity.
Lapid, speaking from the podium of the General Assembly, accused Tehran’s leadership in a “orchestraof hate” against Jews and stated that Iran’s ideologues “hate, kill, and torture Muslims who think differently,” referring to the death of a woman after she was arrested for Iran’s morality policies. This has triggered widespread protests.
Israel considers Iran archenemy and also blames Tehran, for funding armed movements such as the Lebanese Hezbollah or the Palestinian Hamas.
