Mexico: 6.8 magnitude earthquake kills one
A woman was killed in Mexico City’s central neighborhood when she fell down the stairs of her house during the shaking.
Mexico was struck by a powerful earthquake of preliminary magnitude 6.8. It caused buildings to shake and left at least one person dead in its capital.
Two people were killed when the earthquake struck Thursday morning, just three days after a 7.6 magnitude earthquake shook central and western Mexico.
Claudia Sheinbaum, Mexico City’s Mayor, said that one Mexican woman was killed when she fell from the stairs at her house. As seismic alarms blared, residents huddled together in the streets.
According to the US Geological Survey, Thursday’s earthquake was similar to Monday’s. It was located near the Pacific coast in the western state of Michoacan. At a depth of 24km (15 miles), the epicenter was located 46km (29 mi) southwest of Aguililla in Michoacan.
The state government of Michoacan stated that the earthquake was felt across the entire state. It reported damage to a building located in Uruapan, as well as landslides along the highway connecting Michoacan and Guerrero to the coast.
Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador, President of the United States, stated via Twitter that it was an aftershock to Monday’s quake. It was also felt in Guerrero and Jalisco.
An already anxious country has been shaken by the earthquakes. Mexico was hit by a devastating earthquake in 1985 that killed approximately 9,500 people.
