Foreign ministers and senior officials from Europe, North America, and South Korea expressed concern about the security of Ukraine’s nuclear facilities.
After a high-level meeting that took place this Wednesday at the United Nations General Assembly, officials including the foreign ministers of Canada and France, Germany and Italy, as well as senior officials of the Republic of Korea and the United States released a statement.
It expressed its concern over the safety of nuclear facilities in Ukraine for peaceful purposes and their personnel. This significantly increases the risk of a nuclear disaster.
After expressing support for the International Atomic Energy Agency’s mission to Ukraine’s nuclear power plant in Zaporizhia, (ZNPP), the statement criticised Russia’s occupation and “fake elections”.
The statement continued, “We emphasize that Russia’s seizure of the ZNPP and militarization thereof is the root cause for the current threats to the field of nuclear security.”
“We remind you that there are increased risks of a nuclear accident if Russia is still present at the ZNPP site. The Russian Federation must immediately remove its troops from the international recognized borders of Ukraine, and respect the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Ukraine.
“Should Russia hold false referendums in the occupied territories Ukraine, we repeat that these would not have any legal and political impact, including the status ZNPP,” said the statement.
Officials also highlighted the importance of ensuring that the UN nuclear watchdog’s resolutions regarding “armed attacks or threats to nuclear facilities dedicated for peaceful purposes” as well as the UN’s nuclear security frameworks are upheld. In the statement, they also stressed the importance of adhering to international humanitarian law.
