Officials stated that the landmark will turn off the lights at 11:45 p.m.
Officials announced Tuesday that the Eiffel Tower will be darkened earlier than usual to address Europe’s energy crisis.
The Eiffel Tour illumination will stop at 11:45 pm. This is the time when the tower will close to visitors. It began Sept. 21st, according to Paris Mayor Anne Hidalgo. The iconic landmark is normally lit until 1 a.m.
She also stated that the lighting on all exterior facades of municipal buildings and monuments, as well as borough town halls will be turned off at 10:00 p.m. on the same day.
The mayor stated that public lighting will be maintained in Paris to ensure safety.
The French capital has taken “sobriety measures” in the colder months in order to deal with the energy crisis triggered by Russia’s war on Ukraine and prevent energy shortages.
Other actions include delaying the time when the city turns on the heat in public buildings for a month, and lowering the temperature inside those buildings by one to 18 degrees Celsius (about 63 degrees Fahrenheit) during work hours and even further after hours on weekends.
The city aims at reducing its energy consumption by 10% this winter, a goal set by Emmanuel Macron in July to conserve energy across France. These actions are coming after Europe experienced the hottest summer recorded. According to Copernicus Climate Change Service (CCOP), energy prices at August’s end were 12 times higher than last year. Hidalgo’s office stated that.
It is not clear how long these changes will remain in place.
Gas and electricity prices have soared in Europe due to Russia’s squeeze on natural gas supplies as a result of Western sanctions against Ukraine. This crisis will only get worse in winter.
