There are headlines circulating about potential improvements to the Google TV platform. This is exciting because Google TV itself is an important and exciting platform.
Under the headline What’s next for Google TV? Janko Roettgers has the notes package of Rob Caruso, the new Google TV Director, and Product Management. It begins with a description of the current state of the platform, which includes 250 device partners around the world and seven of the top 10 TV manufacturers that have Google TV embedded. “If you want to get inside baseball, this is how any press conference with any platform begins — with numbers that tell you how important and big the company you are talking to at the moment. It is a good context but …).”
The talk about fitness integration is what has really made headlines. Roettgers was told by Caruso that fitness is another area worth exploring. This is important for many reasons. The first is the Fitbit purchase, so it’s natural that they are looking at Google TV with health in mind. We are all spending more time in front of our TVs so it makes sense to consider Google TV with fitness in view.
However, this is a long way to getting any kind of shippable product. Google is known for its love of Lucy van Pelt, and that’s what it loves to d. We’re all Charlie Brown, and products are the football. This is the second version of Google TV.
It’s good news for us, but not for Google, that the company has a strong reputation in terms of TV integration and fitness. It’s from Apple. It’s impossible to avoid the comparison and it serves as an excellent starting point for Google’s efforts to get something in front of customers that they will actually use.
Some parts of it will be simple. Some parts of it will be easy.
