France will shut off hot water from public buildings’ toilets and require municipalities to lower water temperatures in public swimming pools by 1 degree Celsius, as part of its larger plans to reduce energy consumption.
On Thursday, President Emmanuel Macron’s government will announce sector-by-sector energy-saving measures to prevent power outages and shortfalls in gas supplies.
In response to Russia’s cuts to gas supplies and the spiraling energy prices, it has given industry, households, and municipal authorities the task of reducing their energy consumption by 10%.
Le Parisien newspaper reported, for instance, that hot water production in administration buildings alone accounts for 10% of France’s energy bill. This is a country with over five million inhabitants.
France’s central policy pillar is “la sobriety énergétique” (energy efficiency). This is to avoid over-stretching the country’s power grid which is also plagued by outages at its nuclear reactors.
Macron also promised to cut France’s energy use by 40% by 2050 in order to fulfill international climate change agreements.
“This requires a lasting shift in our habits, behavior,” the energy ministry stated in a statement before Thursday’s announcements.
