Spain’s La Tomatina festival returns after pandemic pause
After a period of the pandemic, Spain’s La Tomatina Festival returns
The event is inspired by a 1945 food fight among Bunol children. It attracts up to 20,000 contestant
After a two-year suspension because of the coronavirus pandemic, people from all over the globe have shared tomatoes with each other in Spain’s La Tomatina event.
Trucks loaded 130 tonnes of tomatoes overripe along the main street. Participants piled the tomatoes below for throwing, leaving the area covered in red pulp by Wednesday.
Participation in the festival cost 12 euros ($12) per person.
After the hour-long noon battle, the streets of the town were cleaned and revelers went to the bathroom.
This event is held every year on the last Wednesday in August. It was inspired by a food fight that local children had in 1945 in the same town. The area is a tomato-producing area.
Local officials stated that they expect fewer foreign visitors in the coming year due to continuing concerns about COVID-19 in Asian nations.
Participants wore swimming glasses to protect their eyes, while their clothes (typically T-shirts and shorts) were covered with pulp.
This year’s celebration was not only the first since 2020 when the pandemic began in Spain. It also marked the 75th anniversary of the event and the 20th anniversary since the festival’s declaration by Spain as an international tourist attraction.
