Each team has to battle through some type of adversity to achieve its highest potential each season, and the 2012 softball season hasn't been any different for the Sailfish of Palm Beach Atlantic University. Starting off the season with a 13-6 record, the Sailfish looked prime to not only reach the NCCAA regional tournament, but also compete for their second national championship in the last four years.

Recently the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) released its national women's tennis rankings with the Palm Beach Atlantic University women's tennis squad earning a No. 22 national ranking. With wins under their belt against previous top-25 teams like Florida Tech and Flagler College, the Sailfish have put together some great success in the first half of their season schedule.

Bottenfield hired as new coach for Sailfish baseball

Palm Beach Atlantic University Interim President Bill Fleming and Director of Athletics Carolyn Stone announced on Thursday March 29 the appointment of Kent Bottenfield as its next head baseball coach. Hired in August to serve as the associate head coach to Major League Baseball Hall-of-Famer Gary Carter, Bottenfield has assumed the top leadership role of the baseball program this season with the prolonged illness of Carter and his eventual passing.

The Sailfish came into the 2012 men's lacrosse season feeling that this is the year they can accomplish their goal of winning the Division 2 South East division of the Southeastern Lacrosse Conference (SELC) and qualify for nationals. Eight games in with a .500 record of 4-4, head coach Chris Southard, who's now in his ninth season with the Sailfish, is optimistic that the Sailfish can reach that potential.

On Feb. 5, First Baptist Church of West Palm Beach held its fifth annual "Super Bowl Party for the City" at Chapel by the Lake. The event had more than 400 volunteers from First Baptist, Christ Fellowship and Palm Beach Atlantic University combined. "Events like these provide assistance… and entertainment," volunteer worker Tyler Purcell said. "It really helps, and people are thankful."

Opening night couldn't have been better for the Sailfish, as they won an emotional 3-2 game thanks to a Travis Murray walk-off single with two outs in the bottom of the ninth. Before the game, head coach Gary Carter came out to the field and received a standing ovation from the teams and fans in the stands. From that point on, the players felt a spark.

"I joined intramurals because I missed playing ball in high school," sophomore Chad Wagler said. "It's really fun meeting up with the guys every week and going to war. In 2011, Palm Beach Atlantic University's baseball team concluded its season with a record of 27-26, increasing by a total of ten wins from the previous season. As for this upcoming season, the Sailfish have added a couple new editions, including new associate head coach Kent Bottenfield and new assistant coach Scott Kingston, as well as 12 new players.
